The biggest benefit is that we no longer have to update the registry package. This means that just about any cargo package can be built by nix. No longer does `cargo update` need to be feared because it will update to packages newer then what is available in nixpkgs. Instead of fetching the cargo registry this bundles all the source code into a "vendor/" folder. This also uses the new --frozen and --locked flags which is nice. Currently cargo-vendor only provides binaries for Linux and macOS 64-bit. This can be solved by building it for the other architectures and uploading it somewhere (like the NixOS cache). This also has the downside that it requires a change to everyone's deps hash. And if the old one is used because it was cached it will fail to build as it will attempt to use the old version. Nixpkgs is a collection of packages for the Nix package manager. It is periodically built and tested by the hydra build daemon as so-called channels. To get channel information via git, add nixpkgs-channels as a remote:
% git remote add channels git://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs-channels.git
For stability and maximum binary package support, it is recommended to maintain
custom changes on top of one of the channels, e.g. nixos-17.09 for the latest
release and nixos-unstable for the latest successful build of master:
% git remote update channels
% git rebase channels/nixos-17.09
For pull-requests, please rebase onto nixpkgs master.
