DESCRIBE CATHEDRAL:
Cathedral is built on a Latin cross plan with an apse at each end of
the transport & a pointed down crowning the crossing. As in other
cathedrals of the area, the facade consists of ties of superimposed arcades
which are echoed in blind arcades down the sides of the church. The insides
have been strongly influenced by early Christian basilicas, with rows of
columns & a wooden roof.
DESCRIBE BAPTISTRY:
The baptistry is a free standing buildings similar to those in the
Tuscan area of central Italy. It was built only for elaborate baptism
ceremonies. It's Dome & upper sections were completed in gothic times. Note
how the simple blind arcading in the lower level contrasts with the
elaborately carved decorations in the upper sections. The structure has a
unique pear-shaped intention that follows the contour of the dome & has
remarkable acoustic properties.
ROMANESQUE SCULPTURE:
Sculpture like all art, was designed to help the laity understand the
great leaders & teachings of the church . Most was part of the structure
itself: capitals of columns, tympanum sculpture, work around portals or
figures placed in niches similar to those already noted at Vezelay &
Poilers. Still other places for sculpture were around the altars & the
crypts.
THE WORD GOTHiC:
The word Gothic like Romanesque is a misnomer having nothing to do with
the barbarian Gods of the 5th century. But Renaissance Italians, looking
down on the 12th and 13th as barbarian, called the style GOTHiC, a term of
ridicule. Today gothic art is synonymous with the new energy & dynamite
style.
ABBOTT SUGER:
Abbott Suger wanted to build a church that was as beautiful as possible
as he could get it because anything less would be unsuitable for gods
house. He started to enlarge & redesign his small church to accomadate the
pilgrims that visited.
THE WORD UNiTY:
Unity is an important principle in Gothic architetcure. It is important
because of interiors and exteriors belong together & are similarly
decorated - that was the 1st time in history that they received equal
emphasis. The structure aesthetics present a unified structure. This unity
was sometimes a wondrous accomplishment, contemplating that the buildings
of 10 took genations to finish. With thousands of workers and architects to
finish.
