ｳ PRESTIGE AND THE 50 DISK LIMIT ｳ
|

ｳ Two months ago, 5 major groups got together and formed an organization, ｳ
|
|
ｳ the SPA, in order to set certain standards for the games cracking scene. ｳ
|
|
ｳ One of these standards is the 50 disk limit. All groups, including the ｳ
|
|
ｳ original 5, have held to this standard since it was first initiated. ｳ
|
|
ｳ The original 5 were Hybrid, Prestige, Razor, Mantis, and Napalm. Only ｳ
|
|
ｳ three of these groups still exist, and Hybrid has pulled out of the SPA. ｳ
|
|
ｳ This means that only RZR and PSG are still part of the alliance. When ｳ
|
|
ｳ the SPA was formed, it was agreed that 5 groups should be part of it in ｳ
|
|
ｳ order to make important decisions that affect the direction of the PC ｳ
|
|
ｳ scene. It then follows that important decisions such as the disk limit ｳ
|
|
ｳ should not be discussed until the SPA's ranks are replenished. ｳ
|
|
ｳ ｳ
|
|
ｳ Having said all that, Prestige feels it should inform the public about ｳ
|
|
ｳ an event that could hold some importance for all of us. In the last ｳ
|
|
ｳ month or so, Prestige has dominated over the other groups, as we are ｳ
|
|
ｳ wont to do. Coincidentally, the two other biggest groups (Razor and ｳ
|
|
ｳ Hybrid) have approached Prestige about "voting" on a new 65 disk limit. ｳ
|
|
ｳ Prestige feels that the 50 disk limit we have now is excessive, but we ｳ
|
|
ｳ agreed to it in the spirit of compromise two months ago. Now two of ｳ
|
|
ｳ the original members of the SPA are trying to overturn the limit, in ｳ
|
|
ｳ what we feel is a fit of desperation. If the limit is raised, many ｳ
|
|
ｳ more games will be "rippable" under the disk limit. This, in turn, ｳ
|
|
ｳ will increase Hybrid and Razor's chances of putting up a fair fight ｳ
|
|
ｳ against PSG, which as we said earlier, has been dominating in every ｳ
|
|
ｳ aspect. ｳ
|
|
ｳ ｳ
|
|
ｳ Hybrid and Razor will argue that quality games like DaggerFall can be ｳ
|
|
ｳ released under a new 65 disk limit. This is, of course, true. Just ｳ
|
|
ｳ as true, however, is the fact that there are many more games of poor ｳ
|
|
ｳ quality that will come out under this new limit as well. This is not ｳ
|
|
ｳ the only bad aspect of a larger disk limit. Perhaps you have noticed ｳ
|
|
ｳ that many large (30+ disks) releases are quickly re-released as less ｳ
|
|
ｳ than 10 disks by what we like to call "no-name" groups. Even Prestige ｳ
|
|
ｳ is guilty of putting out games as larger than they need to be, in the ｳ
|
|
ｳ interest of saving time so that we can win on the release. I can't ｳ
|
|
ｳ defend our actions to you, but I can tell you that EVERY time the disk ｳ
|
|
ｳ limit has increased, the ripping quality has summarily gone DOWN. So, ｳ
|
|
ｳ where you now see a 50 disk version of some freeware repackage of Euro ｳ
|
|
ｳ Fighter 2000 "Tactops" like Razor put out a few weeks ago, you'll see ｳ
|
|
ｳ a 65 disk retread of the same crap. Do you really want this? ｳ
|
|
ｳ ｳ
|
|
ｳ By the same token, a 58 disk version of DaggerFall is not likely to ｳ
|
|
ｳ include many of the features you would expect from this kind of game. ｳ
|
|
ｳ You probably won't get sound, music, animations important to the ｳ
|
|
ｳ development of the game's plot, and God knows what else. Do you really ｳ
|
|
ｳ want to download a 58 disk release only to find out that you should ｳ
|
|
ｳ have gone out and bought the game in the first place? Unlikely. ｳ
|
|
ｳ ｳ
|
|
ｳ The courier groups, who thrive on bytes uploaded to a site or board, ｳ
|
|
ｳ might enjoy a larger release to trade. I would ask them to consider ｳ
|
|
ｳ the sites and boards they trade on - they have limited disk space. I ｳ
|
|
ｳ would ask them to consider the users that download the games - its bad ｳ
|
|
ｳ enough getting stuck with 30 disks of crapware, but you'll be doubly ｳ
|
|
ｳ annoyed if that 30 disks turns into 60, with full animations of the ｳ
|
|
ｳ company's logo as well as an aerial view of the disk duplication ｳ
|
|
ｳ facility where your pirated game originated. ｳ
|
|
ｳ ｳ
|
|
ｳ But seriously, folks. The 50 disk limit is more than generous for what ｳ
|
|
ｳ we do today. Look at the past 20 or 30 releases, how many of those are ｳ
|
|
ｳ even in the 40-50 disk range? Only a handful, and most of those were ｳ
|
|
ｳ not worth downloading in the first place. If we open the door to a 65 ｳ
|
|
ｳ disk limit, we'll get a small handful of quality games, true. But the ｳ
|
|
ｳ price we have to pay, in the form of bad ripping and more bad games, is ｳ
|
|
ｳ simply not worth what Hybrid and Razor are trying to sell. ｳ
|
