NASA'S HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE MONTHLY STATUS REPORT
FOR OCTOBER 1991
The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) continues to operate normally
under four-gyro control, using gyros 1, 2, 3 and 5. On October 26,
Gyro #4, which has been saturated and off-line since June 30, began
displaying nominal values on both its analog and digital rate
monitor. Subsequently, on November 4, Gyro #4 again went off line.
Even though it came back on for short periods, it was never used in
the control loop. Flight operations personnel will continue to
monitor its performance. The status of Gyro #6, which failed last
December, remains unchanged.
On October 7, flight operations personnel initiated
operational procedures to transition the Tracking and Data Relay
Satellite-West (TDRS-West) support from the TDRS-C spacecraft to
the recently-deployed TDRS-E. The transition went smoothly.
On October 11, Goddard Space Flight Center formally signed a
contract with Ball Corporation, of Boulder, CO for completion of
the Corrective Optics Space Telescope Axial Replacement (COSTAR).
Development at Ball is on schedule for a servicing mission in early
1994 with a Critical Design Review scheduled for December 1991 and
a planned delivery to NASA in April 1993.
The HST science program has initiated some unique cosmological
observations using remote quasars as background sources.
Scientists working with both the Goddard High Resolution
Spectrograph (GHRS) and the Faint Object Spectrograph (FOS) have
reported detection of Lyman-alpha forest absorption in low, red-
shift quasars, and the FOS is obtaining data with important
implications for understanding the quasar emission process. In
addition, the GHRS--in cooperation with the International
Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) and ground-based observers--has obtained
correlative data on the flare star AU Mic. Results from these and
other observations will be presented at the upcoming American
Astronomical Society (AAS) meeting in Atlanta in January 1992.

³o³BOEING DEFENSE & SPACE GROUP AWARDED INTERCEPTOR INTEGRATION³o³
³o³CONTRACT ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³SEATTLE (NOV. 21) PR NEWSWIRE - Boeing Defense & Space Group³o³
³o³announced today it has received a contract from the U.S. ³o³
³o³Army Strategic Defense Command (SDC) to develop a hot-gas ³o³
³o³valve that can be used on miniature kinetic energy ³o³
³o³interceptors. A high-speed weapon to destroy enemy ³o³
³o³missiles, the interceptors are designed to destroy incoming ³o³
³o³missiles at high altitudes on impact, rather than by using ³o³
³o³explosives. ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³The valves, which must be small, lightweight and able to ³o³
³o³withstand extremely high temperatures and chemical ³o³
³o³environments caused by rocket motor exhaust, are used to ³o³
³o³steer the interceptors by controlling attitude and ³o³
³o³maneuvering movements as they move along their high-speed ³o³
³o³paths. ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³Just one element of the Miniature Kinetic Energy Interceptor³o³
³o³Integration program, the Boeing contract is valued at more ³o³
³o³than $1.6 million. Under the contract, the Group's ³o³
³o³Materials and Processes Advanced Materials organization will³o³
³o³develop and demonstrate a low- cost, high-rate production ³o³
³o³method for manufacturing miniature hot gas valves. ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³The 33-month program will consist of four phases: valve ³o³
³o³design evaluation and selection, fabrication process ³o³
³o³development, flight- weight valve fabrication and testing, ³o³
³o³and documenting the research effort. ³o³

³o³The valve passages will be made of rhenium metal encased in ³o³
³o³a composite material, and will be able to withstand ³o³
³o³temperatures as high as 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit. A four- ³o³
³o³valve assembly is comparable in size to a hockey puck. ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³Other firms selected by Boeing to support the contract ³o³
³o³include Moog Space Products of East Aurora, N.Y., for valve ³o³
³o³design; Ultramet of Pacoima, Calif., for the rhenium ³o³
³o³coating; and Talley Defense Systems of Mesa, Ariz., for ³o³
³o³solid propellant testing. ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³Boeing began working in the hot gas valve area in 1985, and ³o³
³o³has been involved in miniaturizing and fabrication ³o³
³o³development since 1988 as a participant in the SDC's ³o³
³o³Innovative Guided Hypervelocity Projectile's (IGHP) ³o³
³o³propulsion system program. During the IGHP program, Boeing ³o³
³o³developed a technique that simplifies the production of the ³o³
³o³small and precise three-dimensional gas flow passages ³o³
³o³necessary for miniature hot gas valves. ³o³

³o³SHUTTLE COUNTDOWN TICKS SMOOTHLY TOWARD SUNDAY NIGHT LAUNCH ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (NOV. 23) UPI - Engineers worked ³o³
³o³Saturday to pump liquid oxygen and hydrogen back aboard the ³o³
³o³shuttle Atlantis to power its electrical generators with the³o³
³o³ship's countdown on track for a Sunday night launch. ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³Atlantis, carrying six astronauts and a $300 million early ³o³
³o³warning satellite, was scheduled to blast off on the 44th ³o³
³o³shuttle mission at 6:31 p.m. EST Sunday kicking off a 10-day³o³
³o³flight with only the seventh night launch in shuttle ³o³
³o³history. ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³Liftoff originally was scheduled for Tuesday, but the flight³o³
³o³was delayed five days because of problems with the ³o³
³o³navigation system of the $50 million booster rocket used by ³o³
³o³the shuttle's satellite payload. ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³A replacement unit was installed Wednesday and tested ³o³
³o³Thursday, clearing the way for engineers to restart ³o³
³o³Atlantis's interrupted countdown at 12:01 a.m. Friday. ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³Commander Frederick Gregory, 50, co-pilot Terence Henricks, ³o³
³o³39, flight engineer Story Musgrave, 56, Mario Runco, 39, ³o³
³o³James Voss, 42, and Army guest astronaut Thomas Hennen, 39, ³o³
³o³planned to spend the day Saturday reviewing their flight ³o³
³o³plans and attending a series of mission briefings. ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³If all goes well, the shuttle fliers will strap in Sunday ³o³
³o³afternoon about 3:45 p.m. to await liftoff. ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³The goal of the 44th shuttle flight, the sixth and final ³o³
³o³mission of 1991, is the deployment early Monday of a Defense³o³
³o³Support Program - DSP - early warning satellite built to ³o³
³o³look for enemy missile launches and nuclear detonations. ³o³

³o³CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (NOV. 23) UPI - Air Force engineers ³o³
³o³Saturday cleared a critical satellite booster for takeoff ³o³
³o³Sunday aboard the shuttle Atlantis, setting the stage for a ³o³
³o³rare sky-lighting night launch to kick off a 10-day military³o³
³o³mission. ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³Atlantis, its six-man crew and a $300 million Defense ³o³
³o³Support Program missile early warning satellite were ³o³
³o³grounded Tuesday because of problems with a navigation unit ³o³
³o³needed by the satellite's $50 million booster rocket. ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³A new ''inertial measurement unit'' was ³o³
³o³installed Wednesday, but engineers were unable to duplicate ³o³
³o³the original failure. And that raised the prospect of ³o³
³o³another delay because of lingering concern about the ³o³
³o³possibility of a subtle problem that could affect the ³o³
³o³replacement unit. ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³But late Saturday, Air Force Maj. Bob Thunker, a launch ³o³
³o³vehicle engineer, said continued testing had convinced ³o³
³o³mission managers that the problem would not recur, despite ³o³
³o³an inability to duplicate the glitch. ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³''We're comfortable with the unit that was taken out,'' he ³o³
³o³said. ''The failure investigation will continue on to ³o³
³o³pinpoint the exact cause of the problem. But we understand ³o³
³o³it enough to isolate it to the box that we pulled out and we³o³
³o³believe it is not a generic problem.'' ³o³

³o³ ³o³
³o³''We don't have any technical problems that we're working,''³o³
³o³NASA test director Eric Redding said of Atlantis's launch ³o³
³o³processing. ''The hardware at this point is performing as it³o³
³o³should, we're pretty much on our timeline and looking for a ³o³
³o³good second launch attempt Sunday.'' ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³The goal of the year's sixth and final shuttle mission is ³o³
³o³the deployment at 12:50 a.m. Monday of the Defense Support ³o³
³o³Program satellite during Atlantis's sixth orbit. ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³One hour later, the satellite's ''inertial upper stage'' ³o³
³o³booster is scheduled to fire to propel the spacecraft from ³o³
³o³the shuttle's planned 224-mile-high orbit to an operational ³o³
³o³altitude of 22,300 miles above the equator. ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³If all goes well, Gregory and Henricks will guide Atlantis ³o³
³o³to a landing Dec. 4 at the Kennedy Space Center. ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³The Air Force paid NASA $60 million to ferry the payload ³o³
³o³into orbit. Given the $300 million cost of the satellite and³o³
³o³the $50 million cost of its booster, the price tag for the ³o³
³o³payload comes to $410 million. ³o³

³o³SHUTTLE CREW BEGINS ON-BOARD RESEARCH, INCLUDING TOP SECRET ³o³
³o³EXPERIMENT ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³CAPE CANAVERAL, FL (NOV. 25) UPI - The Atlantis astronauts ³o³
³o³successfully launched a $300 million Air Force early ³o³
³o³warning satellite Monday before turning to on-board ³o³
³o³research, including a hush-hush military space surveillance ³o³
³o³experiment. ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³The primary goal of the marathon 10-day flight was ³o³
³o³accomplished at 1:03 a.m. EST Monday with the successful ³o³
³o³deployment of the Defense Support Program - DSP - satellite ³o³
³o³from Atlantis's cargo bay. ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³Both stages of the satellite's $50 million ''inertial upper ³o³
³o³stage'' booster then fired, at 2:03 a.m. and 7:18 a.m., to ³o³
³o³propel the 2.5-ton spacecraft from the shuttle's ³o³
³o³224-mile-high orbit to its operational altitude of 22,300 ³o³
³o³miles above the equator. ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³Atlantis's launch Sunday was delayed five days because of ³o³
³o³problems with the rocket's navigation system. But the ³o³
³o³Boeing-built IUS booster performed flawlessly Monday and ³o³
³o³Air Force mission managers were elated with the results. ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³''The spacecraft was successfully deployed on schedule and ³o³
³o³the IUS has boosted the payload to the proper orbit,'' said ³o³
³o³Maj. James Steele, director of payload operations at Air ³o³
³o³Force Space Systems Division. ''We're very pleased with the ³o³
³o³performance of the DSP and the IUS.'' ³o³

Once checked out and in operation, the DSP satellite will
join a globe-spanning network of such early warning
sentinels equipped with infrared telescopes capable of
detecting enemy missile launches or nuclear explosions.
With the primary goal of the 44th shuttle mission behind
them, the Atlantis astronauts plan to devote the rest of
the year's sixth and final shuttle flight to carrying out a
battery of on-board civilian and military research
projects.
Commander Frederick Gregory, 50, co-pilot Terence Henricks,
39, Story Musgrave
56, Mario Runco, 39, James Voss, 42, and Army guest
astronaut Thomas Hennen, 39, began their first full day in
orbit Monday at 1:44 p. m. with a wakeup call from the
commander of the starship Enterprise on the television show
''Star Trek: The Next Generation.''
''Space. The final frontier,'' intoned actor Patrick
Stewart in a recorded message. ''This is the voyage of the
space shuttle Atlantis. It's 10-day mission: to explore new
methods of remote sensing and observation of planet Earth;
to seek out new data on radiation in space and a new
understanding of the effects of microgravity on the human
body.''
Gregory responded: ''Good morning Enterprise!''
Among the tasks facing the astronauts Monday was work with
a medical experiment to learn more about how to counteract
the effects of weightlessness for space fliers returning to
Earth's gravity.
Atlantis's flight originally was planned to last just four
days, but the mission was extended to gather more data with
the Lower Body Negative Pressure experiment.
The LBNP apparatus is a large sleeping bag-like contraption
that an astronaut climbs into and seals off at the waist.
By lowering the bag's internal air pressure, blood can be
forced back into the lower body just like it is on Earth
when someone stands up.
Earlier flight tests indicate LBNP could help astronauts
eliminate the dizziness that often accompanies the return
to Earth's gravity. The Atlantis astronauts plan to take
turns using the device throughout the mission.
Hennen, one of the nation's leading experts on image
analysis, planned to begin work Monday with an space
surveillance experiment called Terra Scout. Using a video
camera with special lenses, Hennen plans to observe a
variety of ground targets as the shuttle sails overhead.
His first target: Ford Island in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
''What we're trying to do is document the manner in which a
human observes and more specifically, analyzes seen data,''
said Hennen, selected for the mission from a pool of 700
military image analysts. ''What we want to do is translate
that data into computer-assisted sensing systems. What we
want to do is make smart sensors.
''We have systems (now) that we know exactly what they can
and cannot see on the Earth. But those systems are
commanded by humans. What we're trying to do is incorporate
the human imagery analysis skill into a sensing device to
make it autonomous.''
Starting Tuesday, Runco, a former New Jersey Highway Patrol
officer, will begin work with a second military
surveillance experiment called M88-1.
Unlike Terra Scout, M88-1 is designed to help military
analysts better understand what the human eye can see from
space and how astronauts might be of service in a time of
national crisis.
Atlantis is scheduled to glide to a landing Dec. 4 at the
Kennedy Space Center to close out the 19th post-Challenger
shuttle flight.

³o³SPACE SHUTTLE ATLANTIS ASTRONAUTS STUDY SURVEILLANCE ³o³

³o³ ³o³
³o³CAPE CANAVERAL, FL (NOV. 26) UPI - The shuttle Atlantis's ³o³
³o³crew conducted secretive military space surveillance ³o³
³o³experiments Tuesday and enjoyed a coincidental close ³o³
³o³encounter with the Soviet Mir space station as it streaked ³o³
³o³past a scant 26 miles away. ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³After the rare flyby, cosmonauts Sergei Krikalev and ³o³
³o³Alexander Volkov relayed greetings to Atlantis's crew ³o³
³o³through amateur radio operators at the Johnson Space Center ³o³
³o³in Houston, saying they were able to watch Atlantis's fiery ³o³
³o³nighttime climb to orbit Sunday. ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³''We were near the Kennedy Space Center at your launch ³o³
³o³time. We listened to the countdown on amateur radio and we ³o³
³o³saw the whole launch sequence,'' Krikalev said. ''It was a ³o³
³o³wonderful sight. We send our congratulations for a ³o³
³o³successful start. We hope all goes well for you.'' ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³Atlantis astronaut Mario Runco knows Krikalev and when he ³o³
³o³was told of the cosmonaut's message, he asked flight ³o³
³o³controllers to relay greetings from the shuttle crew. ³o³
³o³Direct ship-to-ship communications were not attempted. ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³''We hope their mission continues with great success and ³o³

³o³The camera is critical to the Army's partially classified ³o³
³o³''Terra Scout'' experiment, which is designed to help ³o³
³o³engineers learn how to build ''smart'' satellite sensors ³o³
³o³operated by computer programs that mimic human ³o³
³o³observational techniques. ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³After initial problems, the boxy camera system worked as ³o³
³o³planned during passes over South Africa, the Indian Ocean ³o³
³o³and Malaysia. More of the same was on tap Tuesday afternoon ³o³
³o³and evening. ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³Hennen attempted to use the camera to look at special ³o³
³o³targets laid out on a runway at the Cape Canaveral Air ³o³
³o³Force Station near the Kennedy Space Center, but cloudy ³o³
³o³weather prevented him from finding the landing strip. Hazy ³o³
³o³weather also prevented a clear observation of Brisbane, ³o³
³o³Australia. ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³Runco later began work with a second space surveillance ³o³
³o³experiment called M88-1. Unlike Terra Scout, M88-1 is ³o³
³o³concerned with determining the usefulness of military ³o³
³o³observers in space during times of crisis. Runco's first ³o³
³o³objective was to identify ships anchored at Pearl Harbor, ³o³
³o³Hawaii, but he was only partially successful. ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³''We acquired several images, only one or two were usable ³o³
³o³due to the smear, our forward track smear,'' he radioed, ³o³
³o³referring to the blurring produced by the shuttle's motion. ³o³
³o³''We were not able to identify any types (but) I saw some ³o³
³o³nested ships along the pier.'' ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³Joining Runco, Hennen and Henricks, all 39, aboard Atlantis ³o³

³o³UPDATE: CLOUDS PLAGUE SHUTTLE ATLANTIS SPACE SURVEILLANCE ³o³
³o³EXPERIMENTS ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³CAPE CANAVERAL, FL (NOV. 27) UPI - The Atlantis astronauts ³o³
³o³trained their spy cameras on ships at sea and other targets ³o³
³o³around the world Wednesday, but cloudy weather and radio ³o³
³o³trouble continued to plague the space surveillance ³o³
³o³experiments. ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³The crew's exercise treadmill also broke down early ³o³
³o³Wednesday, prompting physicians on Earth to ask the ³o³
³o³astronauts to substitute deep kneebends instead to keep in ³o³
³o³shape and to gather medical data about the body's ³o³
³o³adaptation to weightlessness. ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³Television shots beamed down from Atlantis showed commander ³o³
³o³Frederick Gregory, held to the floor of the crew cabin by ³o³
³o³elastic bungee cords, doing repetitive ''space squats'' to ³o³
³o³the amusement of his crewmates. ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³''Atlantis, the scores from the flight (surgeons) are 5.2, ³o³
³o³4.2 and 5. 7 for Fred,'' joked astronaut James Halsell in ³o³
³o³mission control. ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³''Is that for his dancing or for his exercising?'' asked ³o³
³o³Atlantis astronaut James Voss. ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³If all else fails, NASA spokesman James Hartsfield said an ³o³
³o³experimental rowing machine was on board that could be ³o³
³o³pressed into service if the treadmill cannot be repaired or ³o³
³o³if surgeons decide the knee bends are not sufficient. ³o³

³o³The goal of the 44th shuttle mission, the sixth and final ³o³
³o³flight planned for 1991, was accomplished early Monday with ³o³
³o³the successful launch of a $300 million Defense Support ³o³
³o³Program missile early warning satellite. ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³The rest of the flight is being devoted to a battery of ³o³
³o³on-board experiments, including two Pentagon space ³o³
³o³surveillance projects: Terra Scout, an Army experiment, and ³o³
³o³M88-1, a multi-service experiment to find out whether ³o³
³o³astronauts can provide useful tactical information during ³o³
³o³times of crisis. ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³Runco, who has primary responsibility for M88-1, was ³o³
³o³hampered Tuesday and Wednesday by problems with his UHF ³o³
³o³radio gear and by cloudy weather over his first several ³o³
³o³targets. ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³He was unable to identify any of the 34 ships at anchor in ³o³
³o³Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, Tuesday night and bad weather ³o³
³o³Wednesday also prevented him from observing ships in the ³o³
³o³Gulf of Mexico off the Yucatan Peninsula, ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³''Calypso, Calypso, this is Atlantis,'' he radioed at one ³o³
³o³point. ''Was not able to acquire targets over site due to ³o³
³o³weather and could not raise you via direct comm (by UHF ³o³
³o³radio), over.'' ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³M88-1 targets for Wednesday night and Thursday morning ³o³
³o³included two air bases in Australia and Hawaii. ³o³
³o³ ³o³
³o³Hennen, an Army image analyst, is responsible for Terra ³o³
³o³Scout. The goal of the research is to learn more about how ³o³
³o³an expert studies targets from space to help engineers ³o³
³o³develop ''smart'' spy satellites that can employ some of ³o³
³o³the same techniques. ³o³
