Purpose : To find the effect of heat energy on temperature change of a
substance.
Apparatus : 1 250ml beaker
200g of cold tap water
Thermometre
Hot plate
Graduated cylinder
Method : 1 - 200g was poured into a 250ml beaker.
2 - The hot plate was pre-heated before use. And the beaker
was placed upon the hot plate where then the temperature
of the water at 30 second intervals of time until the
temperature of the water reached 80 Degrees C. And the
temperature of the water was recorded on a data sheet.
3 - The total heat energy delivered to the water was calculated,
In Joules. The formula was (q=watts X heating time in sec.)
4 - A graph was plotted showing the information recorded during
the expirment with the V Axis showing heat energy and along
the H Axis temperature was recorded.
5 - The slope was calculated on the graph in J/C for a mass
of 200g
Discussion: 1 - As the thermal energy increases the temperature of the water
rises.
2 - During a 240s interval 4550 joules more was added to the
water.
3 - During the 120s interval and a 240s interval the temperature
increases by 21 degrees.
4 - The temperature increases slower as you approach the boiling
point of any substance. Eg: Water.
5 - The relationship between heat energy and temperature change
is as you add heat to any substance the temperature goes up
as heat, but during the changeing of states the heat is
absorobed to change the state and therefore the heat is not
makeing the temperature go up at that particular point but
during the points (inbetween) the temperature must rise.
6 - The slope was compared with other calculations in the class
and my hypostheisis is that they should all be about the
same. I have'nt actually compared with others yet but this
is what i hypothesize.
7 - The significance of the slope is to tell you the avg of the
degree of the angle on the graph of your values
