No restrictions are placed on the use of the system. As the system is

I may find offensive. Because of the limited size of the system, it will be

periodically purged of messages. (only 629 lines of data can be saved)

To leave a message, type 'ENTER' and use ctrl/C or break to get out of the

ENTER mode. The message is automatically stored. If after entering the

message you find you made a mistake, use the replace command to replace

The Book of Souls is a very famous work in which much magical information can

Suggestion on new bbs: Say NOTHING until it actually is running, and available
to the public. I have seen too many people brag about what a wonderful bbs
they have/will have. Usually, nothing ever comes of it. If it does, the
bbs is frequently no better that average. Besides, if it really is so great,
word will spread within days and you'll have all the users you will ever want.
It is hard to keep such a secret in modemland.

Sue: Thank you for the warm welcome, and us college boys do have better
things to do with our time... which we try to ignore, so we can revel in
the flotsam and jetsam that inhabit crufty corners such as the Inn. Such a
gentle, familiar joy; returning here, finding the cruft as I left it, and
always someone who remembers... someone who says hello...
As for the SmorgasSystem, it is a larger PDP-11. As for being desginated
for any specific use, only one comes to mind, I sincerly hope that it will
be of value as a communications tool. I have wasted so much time, so much
energy, playing with software written by HS students for their C64 and 1541
disk, inlicted from the hours of 12pm to 6am [Mom and Dad aren't awake],
that end up going down in a month or two that I want to see if a truly
usefull, powerful system availiable for public use is really an answer to
the demand for quality and utility the BBS public clammers for. I hope so,
as it is already a modemer's jungle out there now, and will only get worse
as the kid co-sysops migrate to sysopdum of thier own little systems, and
instead of having 50 or a 100 systems to sift through, we have 500 or a
1000.
I see from the enteries at the bottom of DB, my border may not be a
unique as it once was... At least no one can take MA 76 away from me! I will

Just a final quick note.
I know that my story has run long, way too long for most people's tastes,
and I do apologize for that. But once I realized this I was far too committed
to do anything but let it run its course. Rest assured that it is an experience
you shall not have to endure again as I am leaving. Permanently.
I had fun writing this story, and I prefer to think that a few of you had
fun reading it. It was a long and complicated story and I think the only real
mistake I made was in making it too long for the format. There probably wasn't
a single person with the exception of Mikey who had the time and opportunity to
call almost daily and read all 49 episodes. This no doubt led to a lot of
confusion and boredom. I shall have to keep this on mind and the next time such
an idea strikes me, I shall put it where it belongs. In the deep six.
But I do appreciate the support some of you have given me.
I'm going now, and I won't be back. Enjoy yourselves, and rest assured it
was never my idea to 'take over' the board. I was just trying to give you
people some enjoyment. I know I did give some, and that's a satisfaction that
all the obnoxious pinheads in the world can never take away.

Destroyer: I too would hate to see you leave completely. As is obvious
by my comments, I *have* read your stories. Else how could I offer
critisism? I have read your enteries, and I feel they are good. I still
think you could use some work on improving your style (we all could,
especially me), but I don't thik you should just give up. You obviously
enjoy writing, so why abandon it? There is really only one person who
has taken it upon himself to conduct a defamation campain against you.
Don't take that as meaning that everyone doesn't like you. I'm sure he
would like to believe that, but it simply isn't true. You do have friends
out here in modem land, and people *do* read your entries. I hate to see
any writer give up and leave. The are few enough real writers as it is.
And it is even more painful to lose one because of a personal vendetta
that some individual has. To put it simply, I am not asking you to leave.
I'm just not that way. I don't want to see anyone leave. I even let people
like NDG use the system, because they too have there place (if I can just
figure out where...). I offer you critisism, but only to help you improve
so that you can obtain a wider audience and maybe, just maybe you'll fid
a way to make a living at it. The most wonderful thing in the world is to
get paid for doing something you enjoy.

Whomever: Lines 164-169 are *NOT* from Aaron, or so I would gather from
certain clues within the message itself. The difference between it and
the earlier message that *was* from Aaron is quite marked. Some things
never seem to change.....

Aaron, you aren't the only one who can claim the MA 76, though I will
give you credit as being the first one I can remember to carry the banner.
I've used it since the day back in.... 1983?.... that I first saw you make
that recommendation. It's the best margin in my opinion, getting the most
entry per line possible while never wrapping around to the next line, even
with NU Y.
Destroyer, one thing you should try to remember is that, just because
you were discouraged here by a jerk (yes, Guano, I am speaking about you),
you shouldn't just stop writing. Writing is like any other learned skill,
you have to do it and do it and do it some more before you gain the ability
you're looking for. I think your work shows a lot of ability and desire.
There are things that need improving, but there isn't a writer in the world
about whom that cannot be said. Throughout life you are going to encounter
the "critics", people without a flicker of the creative spark that drives
one to write or draw or sculpt, and they will be nasty and abusive in an
attempt to stop you from doing what they cannot. Take the few constructive
comments they make for what they are worth, and discard the rest. If you
wish to change your style to fit the medium, do so. BW is a special medium,
with different limitations than you are likely to encounter elsewhere. If
you go over 50 lines in an entry, you are going to irritate someone (though
why I have yet to understand.... some people make a career out of becoming
irritated). But whatever you decide to do, don't stop writing. You didn't
stop walking as an infant the first 100 times you fell down; the ability to
get discouraged is a learned trait. Don't take the lesson now!

From various comments above it appears that someone is faking "aw shucks"
messages to The Destroyer. Hmmmmmm. I don't trust anyone who claims that
he'll never use this system again, since it is so difficult to prove who's
who. My guess is that he'll soon make his appearance (if he hasn't already)
as yet another user.
===========
Limpid Lizard, this board is used for whatever purpose you choose as long
as it is not destructive. Read the opening lines to this disk and also
the help file, you'll get the hang of it.
___________________________________________________________________________
To "====": I doubt that the (as you put it) "aw shucks" msgs are faked.
Destroyer may not have been the best writer ever seen on this board but he
was at least readable!
Aaron & other MA 76 people: Try MA 75 as MA 76 with NU Y can result in
extra lines on the screen (printing in column 80 causes the cursor to go to
the next line, then comes the LF/CR)

OK, you old Backwater debaters, I know you are out there somewhere. I just wanted to ask you a couple questions. First
off, have you heard of our Chief of Police Penny's latest idea to make Portland's streets safer? She wants all new hires
on the police force to be NON-SMOKERS only. As you all know, smoking greatly affects a person's ability to enforce the
law, besides, no one likes to ride to the local bastile in a smelly patrol-car. Now this rule is not in effect yet, due
in part to its questionable legality. Now I ask you, is this the sort of actions we like to see our police officials

Then they will be disarmed so as not to violate any animal's civil rights,

Leonard: Back in the days I raised the MA 76 banner (with a little
help!), I was using an average terminal. Like most terminals, a character in
the 80th column didn't phase it one way or another... it was the 81st char-
acter the inserted the CR/LF combo... Now, being substatially poorer, [but
University of Portland would claim "Ah, but so much more well rounded..."]
I have had the misfortune of using sub-average grade terminals... and guess
what? Yes, it's that 80th character that gets it into the 'gosh, you need a
new line... here, let me add one for you..." mode. Had I been just a tad
poorer, MA 75 might be my battle-cry now. But, of course, if everyone used
MA 76, even those users with lower grade terminals could run without extra
lines, as they then could be set to "no wrap", with no ill effect. Such is

the stuff ANSI is made of...

I don't often take an opinion, but here I find that I have a very strong
one. As is stated above. NDG, your words are most aptly applied to yourself.
There is not the overwelming hatred for Destroyer that you imply. There
are indeed those who don't care about his entries. There are also those
who do like his entries. And there are those who don't care one way or the
other. I have noticed that those who have stated that they don't like it
spend 90% or more personally detracting him. While those that have offered
support have taken the time to clearly state their position with a minimal
amount of name calling. Name calling offers little other then to show your
own lack in being able to express yourself. I'm surprised you haven't
attacked someone else. Piper maybe? no, he's too safe, not controversial
enough. You would rather pick someone who isn't as powerful to attack so
that you can gain the attention you want. Again I say that I think it is a
shame that you feel you must use your talents to defame and denigerate
others. All you gain is negative attention. Why not pursue positive
attention and be creative? Be constructive, not destructive. You'll get a
lot further inthe world by applying positive actions instead of negative.

As I understand it, the reason for going for non-smoking cops is that
the health benefits and insurance for a non-smoker cost the department less

money. A compromise that would solve the money problem and not offend
smokers (gee, we don't want to do *that*) would be to have smokers pay the

difference in premiums themselves. But then we'd have to figure out a way

of insuring that they weren't lying. And (no doubt) it would be violate the

Smoking policemen... now there is a novel concept. Maybe what the chief is
afraid of is that while on a bust the policeman will rush up to the offender,
pull his gun, yell "Freeze, police!" take a deep drag off of his handy cig,
being short of breath as a result of the overexertion causes him to inhale
more deeply then normal, causing him to go into a fit of coughing, which
causes him to accidently shoot the suspect, then becuase he is doubled over
from the deep wracking cough, he accidentally fires the gun again, and
shoots himself in the foot. Yes, lets not allow any smoking of the police
officers, it's too dangerous.
Besides, who would want to smoke a policeman anyway, it's damn difficult to
get them wrapped up in those little papers....

On the serious side, I don't expect anything to come of it, it was just a
ballon that Herrington let up to see what the reaction would be. The are
many problems with the concept. The biggest being that she can't tell a
policeman what he can and can't do when off duty. There have been many cases
tried to that effect, and they have always gone in favor of a person being
allowed to do what they want on their own time. This is based around the
very concepts of which this country was formed, life, liberty, and the
pursuit of happiness. You have a contractual obligation to perform the
duties as assigned you when on the job, and within reason that can even
include not smoking if that is a component deemed a negative on the job.
If it is in the contract, and you sign it, then you are obligated by the
terms of that contract. On the other hand however, In your own time, when
you are not under the terms of the contract (generally deemed as when you
are not being paid), then you have every right to do what you wish with your
life if that includes smoking then there is no reason why not. It is not
an illegal activity. Now if he is in uniform, and he signed a contract

saying he would not smoke on the job, and he is on his own time but in
uniform, they could concevibly say that he is promoting himself as being on
duty by the act of still wearing his uniform, and thus cannot smoke. Of
course if they are going to use this argument, then they must accept that
he is indeed on duty, and thus must be willing to pay him overtime.
I suspect that that would be more expensive then the insurance. Actually,
I can understand some aspects of it. If a person desires to smoke, that
is their decision, but on the other hand those that don't wish to should
not have to pay for the privillage of the person to smoke. Smoking is
indeed an expensive habit both in terms of purchasing the cigs, as well as
added health costs involved. But, desiganted smoking areas, partners who
are compatible, and optional health coverage that the smoker himself can
pay. In time something along those lines may come into being, but in the
meantime you'll hear the same old political battles rage of consitutional
rights being abused or suspended.

being depressed when someone kicks you were it hurts most. <ahem>

NDS: No, I've seldom seen it work either, but I keep trying... oh well.
