Book Worm

A thousand books, they line the wall,
But I can say, I've read them all.
A thousand lives, they've let me live,
Oh how much, these books can give.

The cover blurbs, the ads do hide,
What greater wonders that are inside.
No cover art can begin to sell,
What authors with their words do tell.

I ask my friends for their wise voice,
I've learned to trust their good advice.
They all have read so far and wide,
But our tastes are similar, and I abide.

I buy my books right off the rack,
The seller smiles, and says, "You're back!"
The transaction takes but a little time,
And I am left with just a dime.

I hurry home, I can hardly wait,
All obstacles to me they grate.
When I get a book I seem almost possessed,
But when I get home into it I digress.

Once I start to read a book,
I'm like a fish caught on a hook.
Like a whirl my mind goes 'round.
I dare not put this new book down.

The pages turn, the story flows,
I'm sure the joy, on my face shows.
No greater wonder, a book can bring,
My soul does dance, my soul does sing.

The fire I started to warm myself,
Now starts to fade, dying in stealth.
I must not stop, this book can't shut,
Nothing seems important, except Kurt Vonnegut.

The pages fly, I'm almost done,
I glance to see the setting sun.
The last page turned, its words I read.
It's then the book completes my need.

The cover closed, the story done,
With another book I am now one.
I can't forget the book just read:
The sights, the scenes, what characters said.

Their words, actions, they remain with me.
I will always remember their agony.
A book when done, becomes a part
Of any reader who has a heart.

My words are few but my thanks are many,
to authors with their horns of plenty.
My world is larger, I have learned so much.
I do love my books, and the writer's touch.

Sranul: I believe that Vidtex and CompuServe use CTRL-C a lot, something that

dumps you out of enter mode. (The line you were typing when your terminal

Within the dash-panel of Carmichael's van; Freida, it's silicon brain
quietly meditated. It refused to start for the station attendent who wanted
to move it from infront of the pumps.
As soon as he slamed it's door and walked away, however, it rolled coop-
eratively out of the way and parked itself. When sad purveyor of petrol
attempted to reopen it's door by force, ostensably to see if the brake was set

all he got for his trouble was a nasty electrical shock.

006.95 however was having problems of his own! As he ate the salad

rejuvinating fantasies.
Hunger partialy abaited, quriosity got the better of his attention.
Only then did he explor the other leg of the inner space.
It proved to have no exits. There was a modicum of dust, tough still
less than the outer chaimber. Dwarfed by an otherwise seamingly large expance
of wall was a small wall mounted tool holder, seamingly at home in it were
varios instruments whose only common charicteristic was thair potential to
induce human pain.
in the center of this space, hung upside down by the ankles with heavy
chains attached to quaint hinged wrot-iron manicles, closed with modern 'master'
padlocks, was a young man of vaguely familiar appearence. His wrists were
secured and seperated by weld-carved steel chanel bars bolted togather.
attop these bars sat a variety of lead weights. The man, mercifully uncon-
cios was breathing and thus presumably still alive.
Carmichael had just removed the weights and sat them on the floor when
he heard the outer door scraping open.

The next few days were a blur to Harold. Hurry up and wait. Stand in
line for everything, from breakfast to a chance to use a bathroom.
His time wasn't wasted, however. The non-commissioned officers in charge of
loading the white cells into the vessels that were to carry them to their
eventual destination made sure of that. There's something about certain
personality traits that attracts non-coms, stance, gait -- who knows what?
Harold had it. He could be pulled out of a milling herd of thousands of
conscriptees. Whenever there was a sidewalk to polish, window to sweep,
or wall to mop, the local non-coms went out and picked out a conscriptee.
More often than not, that conscriptee was Harold. At last, after an
interminable wait, he came to the head of the queue. Before boarding the
vessel, he hesitated slightly, but finally boarded with a sense of adventure
to come. Bravely, he merged with the onrushing crowds.

Milchar and Grann carefully boarded the strange device that had whirred down
the corridor towards them. It quickly whisked them to the control room of
the TARDIS, not too much the worse after the trip.
A rather thin figure wrapped in exceedingly tacky clothing, among which a
twenty-six foot long scarf showed itself prominently, was huddled over the
controls dealing with course setting of the TARDIS. The Doctor had given
Milchar a brief overview of which sections of buttons and levers did what
some time ago, for fear that otherwise he might accidently touch something
they'd both regret. Milchar, of course, was naturally a bit surprised to see
a strange box-like object attached to the temporal control section. Milchar
began to open his mouth to say something when the Doctor spoke up.
"Well, Milch, Glad to see you. And who's that? Never mind for now, you must
be tired. I'll just finish the plotting while you ask me your two questions,
and then we'll retire to get a drink somewhere. At least ONE of the sections
should have a working dispenser."
"This is Grann, my pupil," Milchar began, taking one thing at a time, as
he always did. "As for my questions, I fear you know me too well. I was
going to ask what that box was, and also where K-9 is."
"Those are simple enough," the Doctor said. "I don't know what that box is,
and I don't know where K-9 is, either. Actually, I was travelling to Gallifrey
to find out. There is some wonderful probing equipment there. A few spatial-
temporal tracers ought to be able to zero in on K-9, only a matter of
triangulating spatial position first, then temporal 'position'. Now, tell me,"
the Doctor said, "What exactly are YOU doing here?"
Briefly, Milchar gave an account of what had happened to them. Grann might
have been embarrassed about his failed spell, but the stubborn gnome refused

"Hmmm, I never did like mucking about with forces that act like magic does.
Why, just look at it! Follows absolutely no rules most of the time, and the
ones that exist seem to be able to be bent and twisted into pretzels. And
where in the universe does the bloody energy COME FROM? Hmmmmm? Sometimes

I think your 'mastery' of this misbegotten force is merely fantastic luck.

Why I haven't ripped up your books and your cards I'll never know."

Milchar stood amused through the Doctor's ranting, knowing full well that
deep down he respected it. The Doctor never did like to give much credit to
something he wasn't a master in dealing with himself.
The Doctor finished his tirade, seeing that once again it failed to have any
impact on his audience. Despite his apparent failure, he led the group to
a lounge with a faint smile on his face.
"Well," he said as they sat down, "you wouldn't want to come along to

Gallifrey with me, would you, Milch? Of course, Grann too. Didn't you say
you had some spare time?"

>an update<
We just swung by The Alt World again:
Traffic is still somewhat confused but starting to resume normal speed.
The amount of usage appears to have rissen (though this may partialy resault
from the comentary lanes heving been relocated integral with those destined
for fantasy exits. Travelers are warned to avoid the question mark which
seems to remain in limbo. Also there seems to be some slight delay in open-
ing the new ^x off ramp and there seems to be no access at ch /old/new.
The <DRIVE> interchange is fully opened but may take some getting used to
for modemists used to other formats. That concludes our update. We now return

Carmichael Sean was once again seated in front of his salad by the time
the door to the inner room grated opened.
Outside, Freida the van took another unscheduled excursion. Accross the
highway was a large tuffa formation. Freida parked on the highway side, due
east of it. The only human eye to observe this was a young paiute five miles
away with a pair of 50x70 binoculars. What he did not see was that the van
was unoccupied at the time. He did think it odd though that no driver got out
for the five minuets he continued to watch, but then he shrugged his shoulders
and turned away. There were other matters to occupy his attention.
'Have you met your new roomate yet?' Carmichael's captor asked in a
cheerfully genial manor.
09 looked up, muttering unconcerned around a mouthfull of salid that he
hadden't seen anyone.
'You must be auffly hungry to be careless enough not to look around any
more than that!' A slight chill started to work its way up Car'l's spine.
#So this is what 'field work' is all about#, he thought to himself, #no wonder
Ambassidor Themnax's localy hired under-secretaries were called 006.95's.
Actualy that bit of jargon had entered the Embassy's argot when Ian and company
had rather pointedly suggested to His Excelancy that such matters were rather
beneath the dignity of his Honorable and Esteemed position.
That was when the erstwhile ambassadore from Lananara had taken to mutter-
ing to himself almost constantly and had become something of an obnoxios pain
to coworkers and underlings alike. An unfortunate development only resolved
when His Excelance had finaly heeded his staff's advice and taken a long and
much needed vacation. He's probably there right now, pickniking in the woods,
living it up with some wood nymph.
ARGH! Wish I was there and His Excelance had a feather ... Car'l was
thinking. Some people just have it made.

Agent Sean was rudely returned to reality by the grating voice, sounding
not entirely unlike the old and infrequently oiled 'sliding' doors of his

current 'quarters'.
