Artificial Satellite Orbital Elements in NORAD "2-line" Format.

These elements are provided as a service to visual observers. They are
|
||
uploaded weekly to the Canadian Space Society's BBS in Toronto, Canada. This
|
||
is a free BBS, operating 24 h/d, <=2400 B, 8N1, phone 416-458-5907.
|
||
|
||
The format of this file is compatible with most popular prediction software,
|
||
however, it may be necessary to edit out the header and the notes. I have
|
||
smoothed the orbital decay rates to enhance the reliability of predictions.
|
||
For a complete description of the data, download the file N2L-DESC.ZIP.
|
||
|
||
The orbital elements are obtained from several public and private sources.
|
||
T.S. Kelso provides about 95% of the elements through his U.S. (Ohio) based
|
||
Celestial RCP/M BBS (tel 513-427-0674). Another source is NASA's Goddard
|
||
Space Flight Center. These two sources provide only those elements not
|
||
classified by the U.S. Dept. of Defense. Most of my sources of classified
|
||
elements prefer not to be acknowledged in public.
|
||
|
||
You are encouraged to re-distribute this file, as long as you do not remove
|
||
the header information nor any notes that may appear at the end of the file.

||
|
||
USA 72 Launch Carried NOSS 2-2 Cluster
|
||
--------------------------------------
|
||
|
||
Russell Eberst and Pierre Neirinck have discovered that the USA 72 launch also
|
||
carried the second cluster of the second generation NOSS satellites. Element
|
||
sets for 91076C, D and E (NORAD #s 21799, 21808, 21809) are in the above
|
||
listing. Their orbital plane is about 120 deg west of the NOSS 2-1 cluster.
|
||
|
||
This discovery proves conclusively that this was not the launch of Lacrosse 3.
|
||
It probably carried the same type of payload as the Titan 4 launch that placed
|
||
USA 59 and the first cluster of the second generation NOSS into orbit last
|
||
year. The big unresolved question is the mission and orbital location of the
|
||
main payloads, USA 59 and USA 72.
|
||
|
||
|
||
USA 32 Found
|
||
------------
|
||
|
||
USA 32 (88078A, 19460), launched on 5 Sept 88, was discovered in a 797 km
|
||
altitude, 85 degree inclination orbit, by Russell Eberst on 21 April. The
|
||
discovery was confirmed by Daniel Karcher, and orbital anlysis was performed
|
||
by Pierre Neirinck.
|
||
|
||
The object is bright and spinning, with a highly irregular flash period which
|
||
varies from 0.2 s to 20 s.
|
||
|
||
The orbit of USA 32 may be a clue as to the orbit of the other recent DoD
|
||
Titan 2 payload, USA 45 (89072A, 20220). If it was launched into an orbit
|
||
similar to that of USA 32, then its date and time of launch would place its
|
||
orbital plane about 100 deg east of USA 32's. To construct a search orbit
|
||
for USA 45, simply use USA 32's elements, but add 100 deg to the RAAN.
|
||
|
||
|
||
Lacrosse 2 Satellite Discovery
|
||
------------------------------
|
||
|
||
Lacrosse 2 (91017A, 21147) was discovered in orbit by Russell Eberst, of
|
||
Edinburgh, Scotland, and Pierre Neirinck, of Malo les Bains, France, on
|
||
28 March 1991. The Titan 4 upper stage which placed Lacrosse in orbit
|
||
(91017B, 21148) was found by Eberst on 1 April 1991.
|
||
|
||
John Pike, of the Federation of American Scientists, reported well in advance
|
||
of the launch that the first Titan 4 launch from Vandenberg AFB would be a
|
||
Lacrosse. Lacrosse 2 is at the same altitude, and has the same brightness and
|
||
reddish-orange colour as Lacrosse 1 (88106B, 19671). Lacrosse is believed to
|
||
be an imaging reconnaissance satellite, which uses synthetic aperture radar
|
||
with a resolution of up to 2 metres.
|
||
|
||
|
||
The Saga of USA 53 - Found, Lost, Found Again and Lost Again
|
||
------------------------------------------------------------
|
||
|
||
Satellite sleuths will recall space shuttle mission STS 36, which deployed
|
||
a secret CIA/Air Force satellite named USA 53 (90019B, 20516) on March 1,
|
||
1990. Aviation Week reported it to be a large digital imaging reconnaissance
|
||
satellite. Members of an observation network which I organized, observed the
|
||
satellite between the 2nd and 4th of March. It was deployed into a 62 deg
|
||
inclination, 254 km altitude orbit. Early on March 3rd, it manoeuvred to a
|
||
271 km altitude.
|
||
|
||
Observers noted that the object was extremely bright, reaching a visual
|
||
magnitude of -1 under favourable conditions. Its brightness was similar to
|
||
that of the very large KH-9 and KH-11 imaging reconnaissance satellites.
|
||
|
||
On March 16th, the Soviet news media reported that several large pieces of
|
||
debris from the satellite had been detected in orbit on March 7th, and
|
||
suggested that it had exploded. In response to Western media enquiries, the
|
||
Pentagon stated that "hardware elements from the successful mission of STS 36
|
||
would decay over the next six weeks". As expected, the Air Force statement
|
||
was vague about the status of USA 53. The debris could have been from a
|
||
break-up of the satellite, or simply incidental debris. Only five pieces of
|
||
debris were ever catalogued. An intensive search by observers in late March
|
||
failed to locate the satellite. Six months later, the mystery of USA 53 was
|
||
solved, through the efforts of three European observers.
|
||
|
||
On October 19th, 1990, I received a message from Russell Eberst, stating that
|
||
he, along with Pierre Neirinck and Daniel Karcher had found an object in a
|
||
65 deg inclination, 811 km altitude orbit, which did not match the orbit of
|
||
any known payload, rocket body or piece of debris. He suspected that the
|
||
object could be a secret U.S. payload, and asked me to try and identify it.
|
||
|
||
There are many secret U.S. objects in orbit, however, initial orbital
|
||
elements, released in accordance with a United Nations treaty, are available
|
||
for most of them. Most objects could be easily ruled out on the basis of
|
||
orbital inclination. There remained three recent high inclination launches
|
||
for which the U.N. had not yet received elements, and three satellites in
|
||
near 65 deg inc orbits which had been tracked for a short time by observers,
|
||
then lost after they manoeuvred. I found an excellent match with one of the
|
||
latter, USA 53. There were no close matches with any of the other objects.
|
||
|
||
My analysis revealed that the orbital plane of the mystery object was almost
|
||
exactly coplanar with USA 53 on March 7, 1990, the same date that the Soviets
|
||
found debris from USA 53 in orbit! This is a strong indication that the
|
||
object in question actually is USA 53, now in a new orbit. The debris may
|
||
have been connected with the manoeuvres to the new orbit.
|
||
|
||
USA 53 was successfully tracked by observers until early November 1990, when
|
||
it manoeuvred once more. The orbit was raised slightly on or about Nov 2nd,
|
||
which is reflected in the most current elements. Bad weather prevented
|
||
further observation attempts until 7 November, by which time, the object had
|
||
made a much more significant manoeuvre, and could no longer be found. So far,
|
||
all attempts to once again locate USA 53 have failed.
|
||
|
||
|
||
KH-11 Satellites
|
||
----------------
|
||
|
||
The KH-11 satellite is the successor to the KH-9 "Big Bird" imaging reconsat.
|
||
KH-9 recorded its images on film, which was returned to Earth in capsules.
|
||
Typically, it used a 250 km altitude, sun-synchronous orbit, which was
|
||
maintained against drag by frequent manoeuvring engine firings. The use of
|
||
film, and the low orbit, limited the KH-9's life to about 18 months.
|
||
|
||
KH-11 makes images using CCD's for later transmission to Earth, thus its
|
||
useful life is not limited by the supply of film. To prolong the life of its
|
||
orbit, it uses a much higher (still sun-synchronous) orbit, than KH-9. The
|
||
first five KH-11's used 250 km by 500 km orbits. Beginning with KH-11-6,
|
||
84122A, a 300 km by 1000 km orbit has been used. The use of CCD's and the
|
||
high orbit, gives the KH-11 a useful life of at least four years.
|
||
|
||
The KH-11 constellation consists of two satellites in separate planes, spaced
|
||
by the angle through which the Earth rotates during two of their orbital
|
||
periods, about 48.7 deg. Each satellite repeats its groundtrack every four
|
||
days; and the east satellite follows the west satellite's groundtrack two days
|
||
later. This arrangement of orbits appears to provide for frequent repeat
|
||
overflights of targets, without the need for fuel-costly orbital manoeuvres.
|
||
|
||
As of the fall of 1990, there were three KH-11 satellites in orbit: 84122A,
|
||
87090A and 88099A. The two most recently launched satellites are apparently
|
||
fully operational. It appears that 84122A is at least partially operational.
|
||
In an unprecedented move, it was not de-orbited after it was replaced by
|
||
88099A, in November 1988. Instead, its 300 km by 1000 km orbit was permitted
|
||
to gradually decay to 300 km by 850 km by July 1989; then its perigee was
|
||
raised to about 336 km, apparently to reduce drag. No additional manoeuvres
|
||
were made through the end of the 1990 northern visibility window (last known
|
||
obs by R. Eberst on 9 Oct), by which time the orbit had decayed to about
|
||
336 km by 732 km.
|
||
|
||
When the satellite was recovered at the start of the 1991 northern visibility
|
||
window (in April by R. Eberst) it was found that another manoeuvre had taken
|
||
place. Using its elements from the fall of 1991 (courtesy of Russell Eberst),
|
||
and its recent post manoeuvre elements, I have determined that the two orbits
|
||
were coplanar on about 12 Nov 1990, which would be the approximate date of the
|
||
manoeuvre. The altitude changed from 336 x 732 km to 559 x 732 km, a simple
|
||
perigee raising manoeuvre, which restored the mean motion to its operational
|
||
value of about 14.77 rev/d.
|
||
|
||
The timing and the result of the manoeuvre suggests to me that it was probably
|
||
related to preparations for operation Desert Storm. It took place a few days
|
||
before the U.S. announced plans for a large increase in its troop deployment
|
||
in the Persian Gulf. Also, USA 53, another very large imaging reconnaissance
|
||
satellite manoeuvred sometime between 5 Nov and 7 Nov 1990, about the same
|
||
time as KH 11-6, which seems to be too much of a coincidence. It seems clear
|
||
that by late October the U.S. was convinced that war with Iraq was probable;
|
||
therefore, it would have been logical to step up reconnaissance activities to
|
||
provide targetting information for the 2,000+ per/d sorties flown during the
|
||
six week war.
|
||
|
||
|
||
NOSS (Whitecloud) Satellites
|
||
----------------------------
|
||
|
||
One of the more interesting U.S. DoD programs is the secret NOSS (Naval Ocean
|
||
Surveillance Satellite), code named Whitecloud, which is believed to use
|
||
satellite borne radio interferometry to locate and track ships at sea by their
|
||
radio transmissions. NOSS satellites use a 63.43 deg inclination, 1116 km
|
||
altitude orbit.
|
||
|
||
|
||
First Generation NOSS
|
||
---------------------
|
||
|
||
The first NOSS launch, probably a technology development mission, was 71110A
|
||
(5678). The first of eight operational first generation launches was 76038A
|
||
(8818); the most recent was 87043A (17997).
|
||
|
||
The NOSS constellation consists of three orbital planes, each containing four
|
||
satellites flying in formation; a main satellite and three sub-satellites.
|
||
Seen from the ground, the sub-satellites are spaced only a few degrees apart.
|
||
|
||
The satellites are small and usually rather faint, about magnitude 7 or 8,
|
||
however, they have been observed to frequently brighten spontaneously to
|
||
magnitude 2 to 4. One long time observer believes that they periodically
|
||
deploy solar sails to provide the propulsion required to maintain their
|
||
precise formation flight. One piece of orbital evidence which may support his
|
||
theory is that the satellites' orbits become more eccentric with time. That
|
||
is a well known consequence of solar radiation pressure perturbations.

Second Generation NOSS
|
||
----------------------
|
||
|
||
A Titan 4 rocket, launched on 8 June 1990 from Florida, carried four payloads
|
||
into orbit, three of which were discovered by Russell Eberst to belong to a
|
||
new, apparently second generation, NOSS cluster. The satellites are about two
|
||
magnitudes brighter than older NOSS satellites; also, there appears to be no
|
||
fourth "main" NOSS satellite. The new cluster, 90050B-D, is in the same orbit
|
||
as the eighth first generation cluster, 87043.
|
||
|
||
The orbit of the fourth Titan 4 payload, 90050A (20641) is unknown.
|
||
Originally, it was in a 61 deg inclination, 455 km altitude orbit, but it
|
||
manoeuvred on the night of 19-20 June 1990, and has not been seen since. It
|
||
probably deployed the NOSS cluster in its 63.43 deg inclination, 1116 km
|
||
altitude orbit, before manoeuvring to its final orbit. There has been some
|
||
informed speculation by news reporters that 90050A is mainly an imaging
|
||
reconsat, and that the NOSS cluster was only a secondary payload.
|
||
|
||
|
||
Pageos Fragments and Solar Radiation Pressure
|
||
---------------------------------------------
|
||
|
||
Pageos (PAssive GEOdetic Satellite) was launched in 1966 for use as a point of
|
||
reference for the measurement of great distances on the Earth. It was a 30 m
|
||
diameter, 55 kg, aluminum coated mylar balloon, inflated in orbit. Pageos's
|
||
huge size and highly reflective surface made it an easy 2nd magnitude object,
|
||
despite its initial 4200 km high orbit.
|
||
|
||
Due to its large cross-sectional area and low mass, Pageos's orbit was greatly
|
||
perturbed (changed) by solar radiation pressure (photons exert a small force
|
||
when they strike an object); therefore, it was studied by scientists who were
|
||
interested in this phenomenon. Solar sails, which may one day be used to
|
||
propel spacecraft throughout the inner solar system, make use of solar
|
||
radiation pressure (SRP).
|
||
|
||
In 1975, Pageos broke up into dozens of pieces, most of which have decayed
|
||
from orbit. Two large pieces remain in orbit, which can be observed using
|
||
binoculars. They are 63014DA (5994) and 66056H (8074). 63014DA is a
|
||
designator for the Midas 6 satellite, incorrectly applied by NORAD to one of
|
||
the Pageos pieces.
|
||
|
||
63014DA and 66056H are now in approximately 850 km by 6900 km, near polar
|
||
orbits. Eventually, SRP will push their perigee heights into the upper part
|
||
of the atmosphere, and they will then quickly decay from orbit. In the
|
||
meantime, they are among the more interesting objects to observe. If you keep
|
||
a record of their orbital elements over several months, you will see that
|
||
their inclination, eccentricity and mean motion change. In fact, there are
|
||
periods when SRP actually causes the orbits to gain altitude!
|
||
|
||
There are two other objects in the list which are experiencing SRP effects:
|
||
DASH 1 (63014B, 579) is a tiny, dense, balloon satellite; object 70103G
|
||
(12854) is a small, very low density, piece of debris from the Cosmos 382
|
||
launch.
|
||
|
||
|
||
Spinning Satellites
|
||
-------------------
|
||
|
||
Some satellites are designed to spin to maintain a particular orientation in
|
||
space; others, mainly rocket bodies, spin because of small motions imparted by
|
||
the release of their payloads. Most spinning satellites lose their rotational
|
||
energy over time, due to eddy currents resulting from their passage through
|
||
the geomagnetic field. Those in low (or low perigee) orbits may also lose
|
||
spin due to aerodynamic forces. Satellites have been known to spin up, mainly
|
||
due to the explosive release of unspent propellants.
|
||
|
||
Measuring and recording the history of satellite spins can be an interesting
|
||
activity for observers. In fact, there is an organization of observers, the
|
||
Belgian Working Group for Artificial Satellites, which specializes in
|
||
measuring and studying satellite spins. They have about 60 members, of which
|
||
15 are active observers. I was contacted recently by one of their members,
|
||
Bart de Pontieu, who informed me that the group would like to exchange
|
||
information with non-European observers. To that end, he has placed me on the
|
||
mailing list for the group's monthly newsletter, "FLASH". I support an
|
||
exchange of information; therefore, I have decided to add more details to the
|
||
flash period table; discuss the basics of spin measurement; and explain how to
|
||
report your observations.
|
||
|
||
|
||
Measuring Satellite Spin
|
||
------------------------
|
||
|
||
Satellite spin manifests itself as a regular variation in brightness. The
|
||
period between successive brightness maxima, commonly called the "flash
|
||
period", is usually one half the satellite's period of rotation, and it can be
|
||
measured using a stop watch. Satellites with flash periods less than five
|
||
seconds can be measured most accurately by timing the total duration of a
|
||
series of ten to twenty successive flash periods. The flash period is simply
|
||
the total duration divided by the number flash periods counted. Make certain
|
||
that you count the flash on which you start the stopwatch as zero; if you
|
||
start your count at one, then you are counting flashes, not flash periods!
|
||
|
||
|

The following is a table of the most recent observational data for many known
|
||
spinning satellites. Their orbital elements can be found in the "2-line"
|
||
elements section. Most of the data is from "FLASH", and Russell Eberst. If
|
||
you have recent flash period timings for any object, please post them on the
|
||
CSS BBS, so that they can be used to update and add to this list.

||
|
||
The column, PRI, denotes the observing priority level, if any, set by the
|
||
Belgian Working Group for Artificial Satellites. Level one is the most
|
||
important. The column, PERIOD, is the flash period in seconds. The date of
|
||
the observation, the initials of the observer, and any comments, are shown in
|
||
the final three columns.

The duration column refers to the timed duration, in seconds, of the number of
|
||
flash periods measured. In the example above, the duration of 20 periods is
|
||
121.52 s, which results in a flash period of 121.52/20 = 6.076 s. Record an
|
||
estimate of the accuracy of the duration timing, in seconds, in the Acc.
|
||
column. If the flash period is short, or the flashes are distinct, the
|
||
accuracy may approach the precision of your stopwatch; if it is long, with
|
||
indistinct flashes, the accuracy may be no better than several seconds. In
|
||
the above example the 0.5 s duration accuracy, over 20 flash periods, means
|
||
that the flash period accuracy is 0.5/20 = 0.025 s, thus the actual period is
|
||
6.076 +/- 0.025 s.
