Toll-Free WATS 800# BBS list by Susan Ots, Roseburg, Oregon
Edition 3.1 Compiled 1/5/93, (Edition 3.0 Compiled 10/28/92)
Revision of Previous Edition 2 10/25/92
Total BBSs=180, Total 800#s=195
Special thanks to Femaster on the Midnight Caller BBS in Michigan for the
original bulk of this list, as well as the initial inspiration; and to
Mr. Bane on the Hacker's Haven BBS, Mike Flaminio: Sysop of the Midnight
Caller BBS, Michael Long in South Carolina, Francois Landry in Quebec, an
unknown person in Illinois, another unknown somewhere, and the San
Francisco PC Users Group, all of whose 800# lists have provided me with
additional information in compiling my list.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Edition 3 (3.0) of this list was never officially released, since I took a six
week vacation just before I had a chance to put the finishing touches on
it. I added some more info. and some new BBSs when I came back, so I've
decided to just call it Edition 3.1, since I did not re-verify any of the
entries extant from Edition 3.0.
I have verified all the information in each entry wherever possible.
Exceptions are numbers that are out of my calling area, wrong numbers,
calls that couldn't be completed as dialed, and disconnected numbers. I
have noted these exceptions by listing them in separate sections. Also, I
had previously verified the information in some of the now disconnected
entries when they were working. Others numbers were repeatedly busy, some
never answered, some I had trouble connecting, or my terminal would lock
up, or there were other problems. I have noted these exceptions in the
form of phone number codes (see chart below). Also, with a few exceptions,
I have not tried any of the local # equivalents of the 800#s; these #s, as
well as some voice customer service #s, are provided for the sake of
completeness. I have given the network links' local access #s that are
nearest to my location (Roseburg, Oregon), since I verified some entries
through these numbers. The dates of verification or attempted verification
for this edition of the list are given as entry codes (see chart below).
I have included 900 area code numbers in this list since they are also
toll-free, as far as phone company charges. The only charges for 900#
calls are access fees set by the BBS, which are charged automatically to
the caller's phone bill; the caller's payment to the phone company is then
transferred to the BBS. These charges vary considerably between different
900# services: some charge rates per call, some per minute or other time
block, some have both per call and time charges. No 900# service is free
of access fees. I have heard of only one 900# BBS so far, there may be
others out there.
I have a Hayes-compatible modem capable of operating at 0 to 300 baud - Bell
103/CCITT V.21, 600 baud - CCITT V.22, 1200 baud - Bell 212A/CCITT V.22/
V.22bis, and 2400 baud - CCITT V.22bis. All operations Asynchronous only.
Which means that some of the numbers below that are connected to mainframe
computers operating synchronously I can't connect to. All numbers have
been tested at 2400 baud; if a number will only connect at a lower baud
rate, such as 1200 or 300, that rate has been used instead. No checking of
POSSIBLE transmission at lower speeds has been made, only the MAXIMUM
possible. In other words, if a number connects at 2400, I haven't tried
1200 to see if that will work. Generally, numbers will work at all baud
rates up to the maximum listed except rates LOWER than 1200; these lower
rates don't always work.
If you have a way of connecting or logging-in to the numbers that I haven't
been able to, including the limited access numbers that are out of my
calling area, the synchronous numbers, and any that I've had problems with
(see phone number codes), please do so and let me know the results. If you
figure out any of the unidentified BBSs, or discover any new numbers,
including direct 800 #s for some of the Information Services, Networks, or
Links, or if you have any additional information at all to add to this
list, again please let me hear of it. You may contact me by leaving me
mail (or a file if you have a lot of info) on any of the following BBSs:
Umpqua Community College BBS (503) 440-4672
Roseburg Area Data Exchange (503) 440-1958
Intermittent Connection (503) 344-9838
The Midnight Caller (906) 774-9947
Future versions of this list will include the names and cities (or at least
just cities) of all contributors of new information that went into that
particular edition. If you want your name to be given you must explicitly
tell me. If you don't explicitly inform me that you want your name to be
included I will NOT list your name, but I will list your city. And if you
got this list from a BBS, please tell me its name & phone and I will send
the next version of this list to it. The latest version of this list will
be regularly posted to the four BBSs aforementioned.
This list can only be kept current (and thus useful to all) by YOUR input!
Comments, suggestions, changes, etc. welcome. Please pass this list around
on as many BBSs as you can. If each person were to upload it to just ONE
other BBS, the list would spread quite well. This is how information is
spread folks! There are hundreds-of-thousands of Computer Bulletin Boards
in this country, and tons in other countries as well. Computer BBSs are
the communication medium of the future (and present!) Every Joe seems to
have a home computer and quite a lot of them have modems and quite a lot
of those with a computer and modem actually contact Bulletin Boards. I
wouldn't underestimate the communication power of this medium. (The only
problem I see now is the current trend of a lot of users to just logon,
download files, and logoff. You never hear of them otherwise, through
mail or even uploads. Who ARE all these people that just take take take
files and don't even say hi? Most all Sysops LIKE personal communications
from their users. Even just to say "Hi, here's a list of 800# BBSs to
include in your file directory"; all Sysops appreciate a "Hi, I like your
BBS" once in a while.)
P.S.: I realize the term "BBS" or "Bulletin Board Service" is not always apt in
referring to some of the numbers below. Some of them are "on-line
services", some are network access lines such as mail services or long-
distance access, some are just terminal links to a company's server
computer! But I've used "BBS" as a short catch-all abbreviation.
