<EFBFBD> JUST SAY "I DON'T KNOW" <20>
<EFBFBD> ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ <20>
<EFBFBD> Author: Jack Greenfield <20>
<EFBFBD> <20>
<EFBFBD>Though I have been mystified by the UFO phenomenon for 30 <20>
<EFBFBD>years, I'm at least bemused by the attitudes of many who <20>
<EFBFBD>haunt its meeting places, special events, lecture halls, <20>
<EFBFBD>magazines and...newsletters. <20>
<EFBFBD> <20>
<EFBFBD>With the certitude and messianic fervor of the chosen, they <20>
<EFBFBD>expound their cherished beliefs: "I know there's an <20>
<EFBFBD>international conspiracy to keep us from the truth!" says <20>
<EFBFBD>one. "The revelations being channelled from the Arcturians <20>
<EFBFBD>are really illuminating!" gushes another. "We have star <20>
<EFBFBD>children!" writes a lady who claims communion with <20>
<EFBFBD>Venusians. "...A powerful force from outside mankind <20>
<EFBFBD>is...driving us...into the abyss!" exclaims a European <20>
<EFBFBD>ufologist who insists the "evidence" is mounting. At least <20>
<EFBFBD>"3.7 million" men, women and children have been abducted by <20>
<EFBFBD>UFOs, concludes a recent Roper Poll - according to some. <20>
<EFBFBD>What? UFOs? Shucks, friend, they're just a lot of "ionized <20>
<EFBFBD>air," states a plasma vortex theorist, as if summarizing a <20>
<EFBFBD>stranger-than-fiction phenomenon that's been making fools of<6F>
<EFBFBD>folks for over 45 years. <20>
<EFBFBD> <20>
<EFBFBD>And, meanwhile, in the midst of all the self-indulgence and <20>
<EFBFBD>egospeak, the ubiquitous Phil Klass, who apparently sees <20>
<EFBFBD>himself as a minister to the misguided, and is seen by <20>
<EFBFBD>others as the Prime Minister of Misinformation and <20>
<EFBFBD>Misinterpretation, declaims, with equal acumen and <20>
<EFBFBD>assurance, that UFOs are all a lot of beguiling baloney and <20>
<EFBFBD>that the very idea our government is hiding information <20>
<EFBFBD>about UFOs is...unpatriotic. Whatever happened to the UFO <20>
<EFBFBD>mystery? Has it finally been solved by the disinformation <20>
<EFBFBD>lobby and the same species of simpleton who, a few decades <20>
<EFBFBD>ago, would have called it "marsh gas?" <20>
<EFBFBD> <20>
<EFBFBD>Has it been levitated out of consensus reality by those who <20>
<EFBFBD>channel 2,000-year-old entities, party with star people, <20>
<EFBFBD>have transcendental visions and access to revealed truths? <20>
<EFBFBD>Or has it become the tool and teething ring of "New Age" <20>
<EFBFBD>messiahs and missionaries, cultists and confabulators, <20>
<EFBFBD>hustlers and hoaxers in pursuit of emotional, psychological,<2C>
<EFBFBD>economic, and other misbegotten agendas? <20>
<EFBFBD> <20>
<EFBFBD>There is, still, regardless of what anyone tells you, a UFO <20>
<EFBFBD>mystery. Maybe they're extraterrestrial. Maybe not. There<72>
<EFBFBD>is, still, an abduction mystery. Maybe the abductors are <20>
<EFBFBD>engaging in what Flying Saucer Review calls a "broad plan of<6F>
<EFBFBD>generic tinkering." Maybe not. Maybe crop circles are the <20>
<EFBFBD>work of fairies, or a sign of imminent earth changes, or <20>
<EFBFBD>clever hoaxes, or unidentified natural phenomena, or a <20>
<EFBFBD>combination thereof. And maybe not. Why must we have a <20>
<EFBFBD>fixed and fatuous notions regarding such phenomena? <20>
<EFBFBD> <20>
<EFBFBD>Someone once claimed that just saying "I don't know," when <20>
<EFBFBD>we most assuredly do not, "know", is the beginning of <20>
<EFBFBD>wisdom. <20>
