<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>ALBERTVILL- At least 12 animals have been mysteriously <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>killed and mutilated since October. Cattle farmers, <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>including Albertville chief detective Tony Cole, have <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>reported dead bloodless, mutilated animals - cows, <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>goats and at least one dog. The animals were found in <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>pastures with no traces of auto mobile tracks, <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>footprints or blood. <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD> "On Jan. 9, I went to feed my steers and realized I <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>was one short. The sexual organs and rectum was removed <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>and the biood was gone," Cole said. <20>o<EFBFBD>

<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD> His animal was killed amid his investigations into <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>the mysterious case. <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD> All of the killings, including the latest - a <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>calf found near Arab Tuesday morning - have formed a <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>three or four mile ring around Albertville. <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD> "They take tongues, eyes, ears, hearts. Sometimes they <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>take the blood," Cole said. There are no suspects in <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>the case. <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD> Cattle mutilations are not entirely uncommon in this <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>Sand Mountain area - and residents remember some from <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>1986, 1989 and 1991. One farmer said he was hit a few <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>years ago and then hit again a few mornings ago. Cattle <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>owners from Browns Valley and Brindlee Mountain have <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>reported similar mutilations. <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD> Most of the animals are worth about $800 <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>and many of them are not insured, Cole said. The <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>killings are apparently happening at night. All of the <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>animals have been found within 150 feet of power lines. <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>Speculation about who could be doing the killing ranges <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>from aliens to satanic worshipers to people in <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>helicopters and on foot. <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD> Marshall County authorities are aware of <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>two black county helicopters, one blue and <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>white Tennessee Valley Authority chopper and several <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>military helicopters that fly through the area <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>following flight paths. <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD> "A TVA helicopter is not a possibility. I <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>don't think ther're involved at all. Absolutely not," <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>Cole said. <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD> Most of the decomposed cows are buried hours after <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>they are found but three were found in time to send <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>for autopsies. <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD> "It's crazy. It's sick," John Strawn said. The <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>cattlemen and finance manager at Gilbert and Baker Ford <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>Inc. lost one of his animals to the mysterious <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>murderers. He said a state animal laboratory could not <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>determine the cause of death. "No one knows what's <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>killing the animals," Cole said. He said he's formed a <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>network with victims of the crime. On Tuesday night, <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>several people called the sheriffs department to report <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>mysterious helicopters flying over pastures near <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>Albertville. The county pilot, Jim Pickett, said he and <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>night supervisor deputy Bob Norwood went up in the <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>county chopper to see if they could locate another <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>helicopter. Norwood said he had already been to the farm <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>and heard a helicopter with a turbine engine. He said <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>the Huntsville Aviation Tower could not detect movement <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>on their screens and was unaware of flight Plans for <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>that area that night. The The chopper was reported near <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>Martling. Pickett and Norwood went about 2,500 feet up <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>with running lights. They were communicating with <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>dispatchers and receiving reports for sighting of the <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>other helicopter, which they said they tried to follow <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>but never found. <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD> We kept getting reports of a helicopter flying at <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>tree-top level with "no lights," he said. The sheriffs <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>helicopter, which is black was not flying at tree- <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>top level and had lights on at all times. <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>While searching for the second helicopter, shots were <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>fired from the ground at the sheriffs helicopter. <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>No one was hurt. Also, Norwood said a car signaled the <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>chopper by flashing lights off and on. The helicopter <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>flew close enough to the car to see that it was parked <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>under power lines. <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD> "People were trying to lure us into high tension <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>wires. I don't think it was purposely for us," he <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>said. <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD> Both agreed they had low visibility and needed <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>more light then what they had to adequately see what <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>they were doing. <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD> We Would need infrared equipment if there was <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>another chopper," Norwood said. The pair didn't see <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>another helicopter but said it would have been <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>extremely difficult because of the darkness-and because <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>the alleged chopper was running without lights.. <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD> <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD> ALBERTVILLE- Doug Segers said he saw a helicopter <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>forcing his herd of 42 cattle into a corner in his <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>pasture. He said he felt the wind and heard the engine. <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD> "The copter was behind my back with a spotlight." Of <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>course, I had a 30-30 r@fle over my shoulder. They saw <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>me run to my truck " he said. <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD> "The cows were scared to death. One cow is real gentle <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>and we couldn't even get around her." <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD> A neighbor called the Marshall County Sheriff's <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>Department. The excitement scared the helicopter away, <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>Segers said. He said he saw what looked like red, <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>green, blue and white lights but couldn't make out the <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>color of the chopper. He said he also saw the sheriffs <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>helicopter much higher. The alleged mysterious <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>helicopter barely cleared power lines before getting <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>lower. <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD> "I wasn't scared, I was mad. They <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>would have gotten (a cow) that night" he said, <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>"The farmers, all of us, are going to have to pull <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>together and help one another out and do what we can to <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>help." <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD> Segers owns a slaughterhouse and said they kill <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>animals every day for people. <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD> "I don't see how in the world can they do it this <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>way," he said. <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD> Some farmers are using spotlights and patrolling <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>their land, he said. <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD> The animals weigh about 1,000 pounds and hold about 40 <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>pounds - or five gallons - of blood. Some residents say <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>helicopters make sense because it would give the killers <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>lifting abilities and would make it easier to take heavy <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>blood animal parts and cutting and pumping equipment <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>away from the scene. <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD> Resident and victim Jole Strawn said he has seen <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>helicopters land in cow pastures at night. He said he <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>has 30 head or about $12,000 in animals. <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD> He organized a network of victims and farmers and said <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>the group has been able to identify three turbine <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>helicopters in the area: <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>> Light blue and white with a big orange sun; <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>> dark blue; <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>> black <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD> "I think they're coming in from away from here," he <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>said. <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD> He also said he spotted a helicopter flying about 75 <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>feet above the Ford dealership in the fog. <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD> "Some of this stuff is real bizarre," he said. Some of <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>the animals were found with no rigor mortis and with <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>limber joints. <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD> According to mortician, J. Hammond Martin, animals and <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>humans are not stiff right after death but become stiff <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>later and then begin detcriorating - once again without <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>stifftness. <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD> Mr. and Mrs. James Denney lost two cows in 1991. They <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>said they believe satanic worshippers could be <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>responsible for the killing. The cows were worth about <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>$800 each and not insured. <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD> "We bought them on a Wednesday, they were killed the <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>next Sunday," Mrs. Denney said. One of the animals was <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>still warm and the calf was not hurt. <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD> The only known helicopters in Marshall County are the <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>two black county choppers, a blue and white Tennessee <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>Valley Authority helicopter and several helicopters <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>that fly military flights through the county. <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD> "I think whoever is doing this is doing it for a <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>party with mystique," deputy Bob Norwood said. He <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>doesn't think it would involve a true cult. "The true <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>meaning of the word cult is hidden. They don't want the <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>publicity. It's their own little party." <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>Dozens of residents have spotted helicopters from about <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>8 p.m. to midnight near pastures. <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD> "They're going to protect their property," Norwood said <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>of the farmers. A lot of the farmers in the area also <20>o<EFBFBD>
<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>are hunters and know how to use guns. <20>o<EFBFBD>

<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD> Pickett said it would be difflcult to determine <20>o<EFBFBD>

<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>whether a helicopter had landed on hard, dry packed <20>o<EFBFBD>

<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>It could be a helicopter pilot and two ground people. <20>o<EFBFBD>

<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>The helicopter doesn't have to land," he said. <20>o<EFBFBD>

<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>easily be used on cattle - and without leaving a trace <20>o<EFBFBD>

<EFBFBD>o<EFBFBD>Now it's a machine," he said. He said morticians often <20>o<EFBFBD>
