to ALL re: CBBS DOWN & BACK UP
Well, sorry for our un-reliability again! This time the HST power supply
died, and CBBS was too specific to that modem to work with others.
We're now on a Practical Peripherals 2400, with MNP capability, but it
does not seem to be going MNP.
Randy sez that CBBS should be "generic" so any modem can be hung on it -
i.e. he'll init the modem with a terminal or terminal program, then CBBS
should just "connect". I think the default must not be MNP. He'll check
further, and I'll do what programming is necessary.
CBBS has to at least hang in there long enough to get ot its 15th
anniversary celebration next February! Lets see, Saturday the 13th
of Feb should be the Sat closest to the 16th if I guestimated right.
for Pizza at Barnaby's on Touhy near California, 2:00 PM. (but call back
for particulars in early Feb).
Thanks for calling CBBS - we enjoy having you.

to ALL re: MODEM SIGNALS
Curious about something - our modem drivers for sending chars checked
if the transmit holding register was empty, then looped making sure clear
to send and data set ready were there, then send the char. When the HST
modem died, (power supply problems) and we tried other modems, they would
"hang". Is it normal these days for modems to not assert these signals?
Thanks!
P.S. a change in the drivers to ignore CTS/DSR was what got it going
again.

to ANDREI SCHEINKMAN re: REPLIES RE: CBBS
Ya, CBBS has been "sick" for a week or so - bad modem, finally changed
software to be more "generic" and allow other modems to work - but now
we seem to have lost MNP (error correction).
How old were we? Not sure of the relevance of that! But "about" 33.
Why create CBBS? Well, there's a long story, but the short one was
(1) that I had an extra computer (I'd been doing some talks and bought one
to take with me); (2) Hayes had come up with the computer-controllable
internal modem; (3) I had a phone line - for club recordings about next
meeting, etc; (4) there was this terrible snow storm on Jan 16, 1978,
that kept me from going to work, so Randy and I got together by phone and
dreamed up the idea. I thought of it being for the club, Randy said that
just we two should do it - "committee" projects just don't go anywhere.
So we just did it. I patterned the software after the "cork board and
push-pins type of bulletin board", and coined the term "BBS" for it.
The future of BBSs? more specialized, more commercial, more lines,
but also a lot of people just getting into it for the fun of it. Multi-
media, graphics (talked to a guy with A HUNDRED SEVENTY THOUSAND graphic
images online, today - over TWENTY GIGS of disk.).
Roll of BBSs in mass media? Well, there will be limited exposure -
things like library BBSs or perhaps a city's or village's council BBS
or something - but still not something of general appeal - just not
a high enough percentage of people with modems yet.
Sorry you had trouble uploading your comment. HEY, in the future,
how about putting them in a MESSAGE instead of only-I-can-see-'em
comments? (Well, some assistant operators can also see 'em).

(312) 283-0559, but not sure. If it isn't the guest line, then

it should tell you what one is the guest line.
As to the "gibberish", it could be it isn't at your speed - you have
to send a BREAK to get many Unix systems to change baud rates. It is
old technology, but saves having to write a custom module for each

different modem that is peculiar in some way.

> When I mentioned CBBS was for a "club",

No, I mentioned that I THOUGHT that would be a good use - for CACHE,
the Chicago Area Computer Hobbyist's Exchange. Randy suggested that doing
it with the club would be by "committee" and would take too long and maybe
never get done, so we just did it on our own.
> How about in the future when most people will have modems (Won't they)?
I'm sorry, but I guess working in the big city, I come to think of
street people, and people in housing projects, as "people", and don't feel
the "modem revolution" will touch these people.
Actually, I'll just have to ask: what IS "Mass Media"? Do you mean
things like TV, newspapers, etc? I don't see BBSs as "mass media". They
aren't "delivered" like TV or newepaper - you have to "go out and do it",
and have to for example tie up your phone line for a while while doing so.
Perhaps it WOULD become mass media if say some apartment complex were to
install keyboards and video monitors in every apartment, linked to a central
BBS, that was linked to other apartment owners "or something". But until
such time, I don't feel it will go toward "mass media".

to WARD CHRISTENSEN re: R/REPLY RE: CBBS
Hmm, I guess I'm creating a chain here.Ward's right. It'll be a LONG
time before most pople have terminals/computers/modems at home. Some
of us (with income) are fortunate, but many people with access to
computers (i.e., $) are still up a crick because they don't know what
to do if it ain't on the menu. I was lucky. Back in '84 I got to be
elected computer person at the American Bar Foundation because (1) I
used to be a ham operator, and everyone though that==hacker in those
days, and (2) I had bought a Kaypro 2 in hopes of gettig some writing
done. I was lucky enough to be given a copy of MDM7xxx that had the
CBBS number in the dialing directory, and I've been a faithful
follower of CBBS for about 8 years now. BUT. Most people don't
feel comfortable with mahines, BBSs, etc. It's funny - everyone will
tell you that driving a car is easy; everyone tells you the opposite about
computers. Yet the latter are in many ways easier (and less risky to
master). So - even among the well-endowed, there's a long way to go.
If you're on the street, or make less than $15,000 a year (like many
people) you're probably out of it. Heck, a good number of the people I
know here in upstate NY don't even have PHONES, let alone modems!
dup. chars.
