Did you know the only word that changes meaning with capitalization is the
word polish? Anyway....
I found myself with a desire to call up some BBS's on this late
evening/morning, and then it occurred to me: I had no reason to! I could go
on my OWN board, The Works. But, there seemed to be a magic involved with
other people's BBSs that didn't show itself with mine. This maddened me, and I
sat down and thought about why this had happened....
Being a SysOp is a fun process, one that I like very much. I'm a Co-SysOp of
Milliways and OSUNY, two great boards, and I recently got my own BBS up. I
chose PC-BOARD v10.0 over the other programs availiable because it seemed the
best for my needs...
It's been three months since I started the BBS, and things have been going
well. Generally, when people paged me, I would answer, be myself, be friendly,
be helpful. I'm a text-file collector, and I have a collection of over 1000
text-files, so I decided to be a text-file only BBS. This, I thought, has been
a good choice. People have complained, but I've found that people ALWAYS
complain, and I don't worry, because this is MY system, and I like my system to
be run with fun in mind, not catering to a few special interests (in the
text-file realm).
Ya know, I'm already losing it. It's like 3:00pm in the morning. I'm
finding it hard to type, and the screen's getting blurry, but I'll continue.
Anyway, This BBS is running off of an IBM PC with 10 megs, and a printer,
plotter, two 360k drives, 512k, and a Hayes 300/1200 modem. This is a fairly
large system, and It's a sight to look at.
The Co-SysOp is a ferret and people have asked me why there is a rodent
involved in the process. The answer is, Choice C.
She's crawling around now, in fact. She lives in the same room as the
computer, and the beeping wakes her up. So, I'm forced to shut it off (the
computer, not the ferret.)
There's a REALLY bad commercial on the radio right now, and it's
bothering me. I'm finding myself really cranky, and that's bothersome. I've
always thought that it's hard to keep concentrating on a good text-file (or
g-phile for you subversive types who thing that letting the air out of
somebody's tires is a full night of anarchy) and the content might get screwed
up a bit. Well, I guess that's too bad.
What I think the best thing to do here is to just read through this little
essay, and you'll get the general idea of my board. I hope. Or maybe you'll get
a wierd idea, and that's okay too. You'll have to be shot in that case. The
number, by the way, is (914)/238-8195. Just in case that's what you're looking
for, which then would be a waste of my time because you're spending no time
looking at the true content of this file.
Incidentally, you could be anywhere when you read this. In my opinion
(humble I suppose) it's not a "geeky" or "nerdy" thing to print out text-files
and read them later, like at school or at the job, or even on the beach. This
is all just reading material anyway, so the only difference is the source (not
the database, idiot) and the source can sometimes be quite accurate and
entertaining. This file was written in the night, and should really be read in
the night, because then you're brain is where mine is, and you won't notice the
actual inaneness that exists in my writing. On the other hand, you could read
it when you're coherent, and analyze my writing. That would be unfair, `cause I
really am unarmed.
If a teacher somehow gets a hold of this, I want you to know that there are
kids in your class that are smarter than you, and until you accept that fact,
you'll never be liked, and you won't succeed at your goals.
Back to the board. When I'm on my board, I see everything. I hear the drive
whirr when checking directories, I hear the printer printing the caller log, I
see a status line at the bottom of the screen that tells my name, address,
phone number, and a bevy of other information at the touch of a button. That
really takes the fun out of it. In staying on top of my system, like I stated I
did a few paragraphs back, I know everything on my system. Nothing gets past
me. There are no surprises. On the other hand, my mind is one that builds up
complicated worlds, so people who log on will not be bored, or figure out all
the little nuances for a long, long time.
My ferret is watching a fly. Poor thing, she can't reach it.
Here's what I want to do. I'm putting an ad for this board on the bottom of
this file, and then I'll have an entry by me. It'll have the basic format for
an entry. What I want YOU to do is, to use a word processor, and put your entry
on the bottom. Then upload it everywhere. OK? It's really not much to ask, I
think it'll be fun, and I'll get some advertising for my little board.
Thank you.
