Do the government a favor and grow your own!

Tired of paying $10 for a flea's knapsack? Got an unused room anywhere from
|
|||
|
|
50 sq ft to 100 sq ft? Buy a metal halogen light from an indoor garden supply
|
|||
|
|
shop (one in Streamwood is Chicago Indoor Garden Supply), find an high voltage
|
|||
|
|
transformer and a timer from an electrician friend, get some 7 gallon pots and
|
|||
|
|
some bat shit and you ready to go!
|
|||
|
|
|
|||
|
|
You can plant the seeds directly into the growing pots or germinate in smaller
|
|||
|
|
containers to select the healthiest. Initially set the timer onto 16 hours.
|
|||
|
|
I've read that a 24 hour light period for the first month will increase female
|
|||
|
|
to male ratios; but I haven't tried this yet. It's important to realize that
|
|||
|
|
gender is determined by environment and not genetics. Other environmental
|
|||
|
|
traits affecting sex determination is crowding and bottom heating. (Remember
|
|||
|
|
it's the females we're after.)
|
|||
|
|
|
|||
|
|
The 16-hour photo period should last at least 7 weeks. The longer this photo
|
|||
|
|
period the higher the yield. However don't go beyond 3 months or you'll run
|
|||
|
|
into problems such as root boundness (too much root, not enough pot) and the
|
|||
|
|
natural lifespan of the plant. Whatever you choose as your vegatative period,
|
|||
|
|
after that, turn back the photo period to 12 hours. This will promote budding.
|
|||
|
|
Roughly speaking, harvest will be 2 times the period you used as your vegata-
|
|||
|
|
tive period.
|
|||
|
|
|
|||
|
|
Why the bat shit? It's mother's milk to the plant. It helps vigorous growth
|
|||
|
|
and gives the plant natural protection against pests. Speaking of pests, be-
|
|||
|
|
ware of spider mites. These will destroy the whole crop pronto. If when
|
|||
|
|
misting you see webs, buy some Safer Insecticidal Soap and mist twice weekly
|
|||
|
|
with the soap. On the following day, mist with de-chlorinated water.
|
|||
|
|
|
|||
|
|
De-chlorinate tap water by letting it stand with open top for at least 24
|
|||
|
|
hours.
|
|||
|
|
|
|||
|
|
There are a few more tricks but this will get you started. You can count on
|
|||
|
|
anywhere from 1/4 to 1/2 lb per plant.
|
|||
|
|
|
